AP WAS THERE: 150 years ago, Lee surrenders to Grant

I was on a motorcycle trip six years ago and visited the spot where Lee surrendered to Grant. Below are a couple of pictures I took. The top one is of the actual room where the signing took place. Both Generals were from West Point and had respect for each other. Although Grant defeated Lee Grant insisted Lee use the larger and more beautiful desk on the left while he used the smaller less elegant desk on the right to sign the papers. As General Lee mounted his horse, Traveller, most of the victorious Union troops stood and saluted General Lee as he departed. The bottom image is yours truly sitting on the steps of house where the surrender papers were signed. The images should enlarge if you double click them:
