In 1989 my son and I went into the Colorado Sangre de Cristo mountain range on horseback with a guide. We originally were on horseback but we were trying to get close to a herd of elk and the horses were making so much noise we dismounted continuing on foot. As we closed in on the elk with our cameras at 10,000 feet I developed altitude sickness. You do not want to go there. It hurt so bad. I curled up into the fetal position and thought I was going to die but was afraid I would not. The pain was mainly in my head with severe pressure. I could not go any further but my son and guide continued and got into the middle of the elk herd.
