Wild Landing

May 6, 2011

I flew light planes for 10 years and landed over 1600 times. Some of those landings had a “pucker” factor especially in strong cross winds but I fortunately never had one as bad as shown in the below video:

“Beings from another world”

September 30, 2010

Please just keep an open mind for a few moments and don’t call the men in the white coats.

Many years ago, I think 1957, we were taking my relatives back to northern Indiana after a holiday celebration. It was late at night and I was driving my dad’s 4 door 1956 Oldsmobile with about 6 people on board. We were getting close to my grandmother’s house but first had to drive around the end of the runway of Grissom AFB (name at the time of the incident was Bunker Hill AFB). It was a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base meaning it housed bombers and nuclear weapons (It is now an open base with little security). At about the point where the below yellow line points we all saw an orange-yellowish globe hovering over the end of the runway. My mouth dropped to the floor and I could not take my eyes off it which may explain why I ran off the road. I got the Oldsmobile stuck. While we were trying to free the car the globe started moving away from the runway and finally disappeared. It was a very cold winter night and we had to get my brother out of bed (he lived near my grandmother) and he had to start his diesel tractor which was a bear to start in the cold and had no cab. To say the least he was not happy with me. The mighty diesel tractor easily pulled the Oldsmobile out of the ditch. Why do I  bring this up now after so many years? Because seven Air Force personnel on Monday in Washington DC recounted their “Close Encounters” with flying machines not yet (after over 50 years) made public. You can read about their experiences by clicking below the Grissom AFB map.
