This is the kind of spin I experienced…

Part of a student pilot’s flight training, at least during the time period I was a student pilot, was the dreaded “Approach to Spins”. There are two kinds: power on and power off. The purpose is to give the student pilot the feel and sound of an impending spin. During a full-blown stall/spin the airplane is not flying but falling like a rock – not a good thing. My spin was just like the one shown in the below video except mine was induced by a power on stall and it was all my fault.  Stalls made me nervous and I liked to get them over with quickly – a bad idea. Basically you go to full power in level flight and start raising the nose of the airplane higher, higher and higher until it gently stalls at which point you go through the recovery procedures to stop the stall and prevent a spin. Some spins you cannot recover from and you are doomed to crash therefore knowing how to recover from a stall before a spin begins is vital. In my case instead of gradually rasing the airplane’s nose I jerked it up to get the stall over with quickly. When I hit the stall angle, I think about 70 – 80  degrees from horizontal (it would have been less had I slowly raised the nose) my plane fell over nose first and began a death spiral. For whatever crazy reason my instructor never taught me how to recover from a spin. My windscreen (windshield) was full of a spinning earth. Remembering reading about how to escape from a spin I pushed the yoke (steering wheel) forward and input opposite rudder but nothing changed – I was still spinning towards earth. I decided if I was going to die I could at least prolong life a bit by going to idle and slow the descent. I closed the throttle and the deafening sound of the over-reving engine stopped. Low and behold the spin also stopped and I sent up a thank you God prayer. My spin was a torque spin and was caused when I jerked the nose up. The airplane subseuently stalled at a high angle and the nose fell violently downward. The wings ceased to fly and there was nothing to stop the plane from turning in the opposite direction of the engine torque. After going to idle the engine torque was reduced to a point that the wings could negate the torque. Shortly thereafter I began breathing again and I decided the whole thing was BS and pointed the plane back to the airport, landed and told my instructor about the whole hair-raising event. He immediately put me back into the plane and we went to a safe attitude for my 2nd lesson on how to recover from a spin – my first lesson was self-taught.

The other less violent approach to spins is done with the engine at idle and is far more gentle with no danger of entering a torque induced spin. In the below video the engine is stopped and I have no idea why. Stopping the engine while practicing stalls makes no sense. If you have enough time you can start the engine with the battery or try an air-start (rushing air over the propeller starts the engine) but engines don’t always start right away because of flooding or whatever so why the engine in the video is stopped is a mystery to me.

I did a 175 mile motorcycle ride today with my next door neighbor and some of his friends. One of the riders is a Master model airplane builder and top-notch Radio Controlled pilot. He flies his models for Budweiser all over the country. Below is one of his tricks: Landing the plane in a vertical position and holding it on its tail. He pulled up a you tube video for me of one of his performances where he had the plane in a constant aileron roll (barrel roll) while it is simultaneously doing a loop. My son and I used to fly R/C and thought we were good when we could loop the plane and land it all in one piece.
