Cities from Missouri to California are getting ready for the 2015 Great Race, including Kirkwood, Missouri, the Route 66 city which will hold the start of the event June 20. Downtown Kirkwood stores, like the one pictured above which has decorated its windows with a Route 66 map and vintage luggage, are going all out to welcome Great Racers from around the world. Most racers will arrive by Wednesday, June 17, but some will start rolling into town as early as Sunday.
The first official function of the Great Race is a Wednesday night reception at Mark Hyman’s classic automobile collection and dealership. That will be followed Thursday with registration and tech inspection (at Scott Brandt’s MotoeXotica classic car dealership) and a dinner at world-famous Grant’s Farm (complete with a tram ride through an open range wildlife area).
Friday will be the General Meeting, Rally School and Trophy Run, followed by a ‘50s themed reception complete with an awesome ‘50s band called Hudson and the Woo Doo Cats.
Great Race cars will assemble downtown at the Depot at 8 a.m. and the green flag will drop at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Illinois is on the move with Federal funds. Missouri not so much:
Biking paths, walking trails get big boost of money in Illinois
After 2 arduous days on 12/27/13 and 12/28/13 driving 8 hours both days, loading and unloading, the below little coupe is now tucked into my garage protected from the current bitter snow storm. The top picture was taken in Oklahoma as we, my friend Dave S and I, were getting ready for the 8 hour trek back to St Louis. The remaining pictures are of the 1930 Ford Model A. It is a nice classic (83 years young) but has some issues which I believe are fairly easy to fix. I believe with some effort I can add a little value to the car and if so it may turn out to be a good investment. For starters antique cars usually have a low price in weak economic times and get overpriced when the economy gets hot; we shall see. In the meantime this old man will have something to putter around with both driving it and improving it.
Dave was playing his mandolin when I rode my trike up to Sailboat Cove Shelter at Creve Coeur Lake. He has only been playing the mandolin two years but has played a guitar for several yeas. I think he does a great job on the mandolin. See what you think:
