1st Amendment

October 13, 2010

I have been watching the PBS series on God in America which describes the impact religion has had on the development of USA law, culture and society. If you cherish the 1st amendment as a believer or as a non-believer you should thank the Baptist Church and Thomas Jefferson. Around 1624 the colonies set up the Church of England (Anglican Church) to be the governing authority over the colonies. Thomas Jefferson who was spiritual but not religious and The Baptist church did not like the Anglican Church’s authority (their officials were paid by the government). Both petitioned the lawmakers (around 1800) to include separation of state and religion in our founding documents and the lawmakers objected profusely.  Jefferson and the Baptist church persisted and finally won out by securing the 1st amendment which is still being used in today’s legal clashes to guide our country.
